There was a sharp argument among senators yesterday, November 24, on the removal of petrol subsidy. The senators were divided as some were in support of fuel subsidy removal and others were against it. Daily Trust reports that the argument started during the debate on the motion on fuel scarcity sponsored by Senator Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North). Senator Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi central) said the only solution to the scarcity was the removal of the petrol subsidy. He added that the current pump price of petrol was not realistic. “It is high time we support the executive in removing the petrol subsidy. It is shrouded in corruption as few people are milking the country,” he said. However, Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna Central) opposed the removal of fuel subsidy. Today, November 25, major Nigerian dailies are focused on the confusion in Kogi state following the sudden death of Abubakar Audu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in last Saturday’s election. The election had been declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), though Audu was already taking the lead in the polls. Daily Sun reports that the electoral commission has fixed December 5, for the conduct of a supplementary election for the inconclusive governorship election in the state. The commission also ordered the APC to get someone else to fill the vacancy created by the death of their candidate. Two bombs have exploded near a hotel in Egypt's volatile Sinai region, where election judges were staying. At least three people have been killed, including a policeman, and 12 injured, security and medical sources said, as cited by Reuters. The explosions in Arish come a day after the second round of a parliamentary election. The Army and police cordoned off the scene, while ambulances rushed there. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Reuters. A suicide bomber detonated the bomb in front of the Swiss Inn hotel in the city, a security source told the Vetogate news portal. Reuters cited security sources who said the terrorist attempted to drive his bomb-laden vehicle into the hotel before security forces opened fire, causing the car to explode.
