Increased Kidnappings:The Senate Summons IGP
The Senate has summoned the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase to brief on the increased security challenges in the country.
This followed a four prayer
motion sponsored by Senator Andy Uba representing Anambra South senatorial
district.
Uba while condemning the crime
noted that kidnapping has assumed dangerous dimensions and is creepingly
spreading to all states in the country.
He also expressed his worry and
concern about the rate of general insecurity.
“These vices are beginning to
assume the toga of legitimate business for employed youths, politically
aggrieved persons and other greedy individuals.
“We need the Nigerian police to
rise to the occasion and see kidnapping like terrorism.
“We must strive towards the
attainment of a just society with equal opportunities for all, ” he said.
Also, the Senate urged the
traditional institutions, religious authorities and all Nigerians to be more
vigilant and participate actively in the country’s security.
However, it condemned kidnapping
in its entirety and commiserated with the families of those who have lost their
loved ones to the perpetrators of this vice.
Meanwhile, the Senate urged the
Federal Ministry of water resources to revisit proposed construction of Daisin
Hausa Dam and any other dams that may cause flood, to take in the flood waters
from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
It commended the National
Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies in creating
awareness which has led to the reduction in casualty level.
Kidnapping is one of the major
problems being experienced in Nigeria. Prominent and non prominent people are
being kidnapped daily and the kidnappers demand a ransom for them to be
released. Some have been lucky to return alive while some others have died in
the hands of their kidnappers.
